$6.2M of Road Improvements

The September 12th meeting covered a couple of exciting announcements. First, the board approved $6.2 million for road improvement projects. This is the largest road work project ever conducted for the county. The funding comes almost entirely from SPLOT taxes.

Broadband Internet

Lee County has been in conversations with Windstream for some time now. Windstream has allocated $21M to bring broadband to Lee County. Until now, there has been little more than planning and lip service. However, Windstream has begun the staking and permitting process. They plan to complete the project by sometime in 2024, but *must* complete it by 2026.

This is exciting for a couple of reasons: (1) *hopefully* it will provide high-speed internet to areas that currently do not have it and (2) competition brings prices down. Most of Lee County has to choose between AT&T and Mediacom, presently. A third offering is welcome.

No Change in Millage Rates

As we reported in our previous post, the Lee County School System significantly increased its millage rate (a little more than two mills). Thankfully, though, the County Commission opted to leave its rate unchanged. The tax rates for 2024 and 2023 are provided below.
